Bikie gang membership has surged in the sunshine state, with 14 outlaw motorcycle gangs operating in South East Queensland, up from 10 gangs in 2005-06, authorities have revealed.
Membership has a jumped from about 600 to 830 fully-patched members, but their ability too participate in gang activities is about to become much harder under proposed anti-bikie laws being considered by the Queensland government in response to a spate of shocking violence in New South Wales.
Under the reforms, to be put in place by mid-year, members could be declared as meeting illegally and arrested.
The proposed laws will allow police to crack down on outlaw motorcycle gangs by taking an order to the Supreme Court to ban clubs from meeting.
