Anti-bikie laws get even tougher

THE NSW cabinet will today approve the toughest anti-bikie laws in the country with gangs declared illegal without warning, ahead of national talks next month on organised crime in Canberra, where police were gearing up for a funeral run today by hundreds of bikies.

NSW Attorney-General John Hatzistergos said yesterday the laws would be tougher than South Australia's, held up as the national model to deal with the estimated 4000 outlaw motorcycle club members in the country.

Laws 'won't stop bikie violence'
The proposed NSW laws, which will go to cabinet today, will go further than South Australia's anti-bikie laws.

Members of gangs who associate with each other after their gang is declared a "criminal organisation" by a Supreme Court Judge would be charged immediately. They would face at least two years' jail and would not have any warnings before being charged, the Premier, Nathan Rees, said.

The laws could mean that bikies could face imprisonment for simply meeting for a beer.
