Hispanic biker club now muy grande

The Deltona clubhouse of the Latin American Motorcycle Association was filled with bikers clad in leather stitched with club patches. Salsa and merengue music filled the air. Members helped themselves from trays of Puerto Rican favorites such as arroz con gandules, or rice with pigeon peas, and turnovers stuffed with meat.

Men in biker jackets sat around a folding table talking and holding black-dotted domino tiles as they sought to outmaneuver each other in a friendly game. Many of the members are Hispanics from different national origins, said David Vargas, who is LAMA's national president and lives in Deltona.

"We are a Latin-flavored club and at a Latin-flavored club you are going to get a lot of Hispanics," Vargas, 41, said. "But we are open to anyone. We don't discriminate."

There are more than 40 chapters in the United States and the Deltona chapter has 32 members, Vargas said. Only five LAMA chapters existed in Florida when the Deltona group was formed in 2005 after Vargas left his business cards on motorcycles at a Hispanic event. Now there are 15.
