The first bikie gang targeted to be outlawed in South Australia has hit back at claims its members are criminals.
Police have asked the Government to declare the Finks club illegal, alleging most of its members have been involved in violent and criminal activity.
But a lawyer for the group, Craig Caldicott, says police are relying on false information that has not been tested by the courts.
"There are a number of them who are in their 60s, a number in their 50s, we're talking about grandfathers, we're talking about people who have ordinary jobs, they are people who are trade unionists," he said.
Mr Caldicott says police spend more than $3 million a year monitoring bikie organisations and says the money would be better spent targeting criminals.
The Attorney-General, Michael Atkinson, has not indicated when the Finks club will be declared illegal. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/01/30/2478000.htm
Adelaide lawyer, Craig Caldicott, has described members of the Finks motorcycle gang as "grandfathers, union members and gainfully employed people". South Australian Police Commissioner, Mal Hyde, is seeking to have the group declared a proscribed organisation under the state's Serious & Organised Crime Control Act, although Caldicott said in a submission to the state's Attorney-General that the gang did not pose a threat. Police have accused the group of involvement in shootings and drug deals.
