Federal Judge Bans Mongols Motorcycle Gang From Wearing Trademark Logo

Mongols can no longer wear patches bearing the motorcycle gang's insignia following what appears to be an unprecedented court order stripping them of their trademarked logo.

A federal judge in Los Angeles has barred the Mongols motorcycle gang from wearing or distributing its trademarked logo after authorities arrested dozens of its members in six states.

U.S. District Court Judge Florence-Marie Cooper granted an injunction requested by prosecutors Wednesday that prohibits gang members, their family members and associates from wearing, licensing, selling or distributing the logo.

Cooper on Tuesday initially limited the order to just selling or distributing the logo.

In the mid-1990s membership in the Mongols started to dwindle, according to Wills. It was then that Ruben "Doc" Cavazos of West Covina took over as president.

He began recruiting members from Los Angeles street gangs such as "The Avenues" and "South Side Montebello," according to court documents.

Cavazos also expanded the gang across state lines into Florida, Nevada, Oregon, Maryland and New York, law enforcement officials say. Older members of the motorcycle gang, like Vodnik, did not like these changes.

"It got under the hands of a man who didn't know what he was talking about," Vodnik said. "Pulling members from Mexican gangs that would call themselves part-time members. There's no such thing as a part-time Mongol; it made me sick to my stomach."

Mongols MC - Ruben Doc Cavasos arrested

Members of Mongols Motorcycle Club Arrested in Extensive Crime Sting. Cavazos was arrested at his home near South Hills Country Club in West Covina.

Law enforcement agents said the arrests could herald the end of the Mongol Motorcycle Club, a Southern California-based group of 600 or so members that claims to be a social club but that prosecutors say is a criminal gang involved in murder, torture drug trafficking and other offenses.

Another former Mongols national president, Roger Pinney, alleged in an interview with The Associated Press that Cavazos was the problem, not the club in general.

"They were just on the verge of cleaning up their act," said Pinney, who is no longer a member and is serving probation from his role in an infamous brawl in Laughlin, Nev., in 2002. "It's not a club-run deal, it's individuals who are the ones who decide to commit crimes."

Pinney doesn't believe the raid will force the Mongols off the road. "This is all going to blow over. The Mongols aren't going away, and neither are the Hells Angels," he said.

ATF Agent Billy Queen undercover as an outlaw biker.

Under and Alone is a book written by undercover ATF agent William Queen and published in 2005 which chronicles his infiltration of motorcycle gang the Mongol Nation. By 1998 Queen, a motorcycle enthusiast, was a 20 year veteran ATF agent. That year a confidential informant contacted Queen's boss, offering to take an agent inside the San Fernando chapter of the Mongols. This was to become one of the most extensive undercover operations inside a motorcycle gang by American law enforcement.

Queen penetrated the gang successfully as alias Billy St. John, a bearded beer drinking motorcyclist. After becoming a fully patched-in member he eventually rose to the office of treasurer. As treasurer he had access to evidence of the gang's criminal activity.

Initially, Queen was subjugated by members to tests of his fealty by taking part and witnessing the transportation of drugs, the trafficking of firearms, stealing motorcycles, and driving getaway cars.

In his book Queen details how after 28 months he began to lose his own identity to his new persona. How he learned to battle the conflicts both within the gang and within himself. Despite the criminality of the gang Queen also came to see their camaraderie. When his undercover work isolated Queen the Mongols began to feel like family.
